British Virgin Islands Tourism & Visitor Guide
Welcome to British Virgin Islands!
Comprised of over 50 islands and cays, the British Virgin Islands appear as though they fell from Heaven and into Carribbean waters. Among the many pieces of paradise located about 96 km (60 mi) east of Puerto Rico, there are four main islands to this British overseas territory. Road Town is the capital city, located on the island of Tortola. The three other largest, most populated and visited of the group are Anegada, a coral atoll, mountainous Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda, famous for The Baths, a natural phenomena of grottoes and pools. Tropical in climate, the British Virgin Islands are a sailing mecca and offer visitors unlimited beaches, national parks, ocean sports and unspoiled natural attractions. Those without a sailing vessel will be pleased to know that the Virgin Islands are also the world's charter boat capital.
The British Navy exhibits much history in the area as evidenced by scattered shipwrecks under the shores. The most famous of these is the RMS Rhone, which was sunk by a hurricane off the coast of Salt Island in 1867. Today it is one of the most popular diving sites in the world and much of the ship is still quite intact. The primary language of the Virgin Islands is English, and since it is relatively sparsely populated, small inns, resorts and villas offer secluded stays.
